Colassal news
My work was featured in Colasal on Friday! Editor Kate Mothes, also creator of Young Space, reached out last week and asked for images and permission to share, but I wasn’t sure what to expect. The write up that Jackie Andres did was thoughtful, in depth, yet concise enough to let the work really be the center of the article. I’m so thankful once again to the women who continue to lift my career to higher platforms with bigger audiences. I don’t have gallery representation or anyone working to generate press for me. I simply make and share and repeat and occasionally I have enough spoons to send off an application, but not many in the last few years as parenting has really consumed any executive functions I possess. My last two solo shows and my upcoming one next year came about by curators reaching out to me and I cannot express the depth of my gratitude for this as my disability often feels like a sentence for solitary confinement. Every person who doesn’t make me jump through hoops before offering assistance is a gem to me.
I usually say yes to anyone who wants to show my work, whether it’s a coffee shop or a big white box gallery, because your audience could find you anywhere and if they love your work, they won’t care where they saw it unless they suck as people and who wants those bougie people as collectors anyway? Not me. I want cool collectors who treat others humanely and believe in fair wages and womens rights and trans rights and making the planet better. I am so thankful to have reached this point in my career without having to deal with a ton of toxic people out to profit off my creativity. I continue to feel like I am a beacon, just sending out my art signal for those that are paying attention and on the same frequency. My beacon has gotten so much brighter over the last 4 years and I’m hopeful for the impact my work will have on the world.
For now, I’m thrilled that two pieces sold following the Colassal article, including one of my all time favorites, Please temper your touch, the one I made with all Lego levers. It was a risky piece because it’s so highly specific. I had the idea almost two years before I was able to focus enough to make it. It was probably the longest I’ve spent on a Lego work. And I’ll be curious to know if the collector intends on tempering their touch.
Thank you everyone for being here, for reading, for looking, for collecting, for making me feel that just my existence and what I do with it is making things better for people. What a gift.
