The Light and Colour we carry
New Lego work from a solo feature at the Art Rental and Sales showroom at the Vancouver Art Gallery. The show runs from Aug 26-Nov 8th in Vancouver.
These Lego color constructions were created for my solo feature at the Art Rental and Sales showroom at the Vancouver Art Gallery from Aug 26-Nov 8, 2024. These pieces are available to collect or rent from the gallery. There will be a talk on October 3rd in the evening. My statement follows these images, which were taken in my yard, a place integral to the work, the day before dropping the work in. the gallery.
Statement
This exhibition is color and light made tactile, using painted modular Lego bricks, arranged one at a time to create pieces that reflect specific moments and memories of transitional periods of time in specific places. The pieces in this show were all made in the last six months as Katherine prepared to move with her family after seven years in their first Vancouver rental home. Times of transition and upheaval are particularly difficult for autistic families and Katherine’s need to order her world became more intense as her home became more chaotic and the future seemed unclear. To better prepare herself for the changes, she focused on regulatory work that enabled her to feel a sense of control and order amidst the chaos. In choosing her palettes, she thought of colors and light she would miss in her home, and how she could bring them to her new home, easing the transition and enabling her to envision herself in a new space. In the process of moving and settling, she realized she’s been carrying certain colors and memories of light her whole life as a way of grounding and protecting herself, softening transitions, enabling her to move forward and into the unknown. These pieces are wired to hangin any orientation, though some have a clear direction. They change significantly with the light.
